Prof. Hassan Basri


Hassan Basri is Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering UKM, and is currently Director of the universityˇ¦s Centre for Corporate Planning & Communications.
Prof Hassan was previously Dean of Engineering (2000 ˇV 2007), Head of Civil Engineering (1996-2000), and Director, Centre for Research & Innovation Management (2007-2008). For two terms, Prof Hassan served as Chair of the Malaysian Council of Engineering Deans (2003-2007). He is the immediate Past Chair of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Malaysia (2005-2007) and is currently still a Council Member. Apart from his vast experience in academia, Prof Hassan practiced as a civil engineer between 1983 and 1986 with MMC Engineering Services Sdn Bhd. He is a Registered Professional Engineer and served as a Board Member in the Malaysian Board of Engineers (2005-2007).
Prof Hassan obtained his B.E. (Civil) with Honours from Tasmania University in 1982, M.Sc.(Eng) (Tropical Public Health Engineering) with Distinction in 1988 and PhD (Completed in 2.5 years) in 1994, both from Leeds University. He specialises in environmental engineering and smart engineering systems. His current projects involve the development of intelligent systems for solid waste management applications, including a smart system with vision sensors for sorting recycled containers. Prof Hassan was instrumental in the formation of the Engineering Education Research Group in UKM, and regularly writes and speaks on the subject. He has until now published over 100 research papers in journals and conferences, conducted 12 environmental consultancies, and delivered 13 keynote/invited speeches at national and international meetings.
